SCRIPTURE

He who dwells in the shelter of the Most high, will abide in the shadow of the Almighty. Psalm 91:1

A POEM

Peace; First Pity

I walked up to the old café tonight, just as I used to do;

Just as I ran raving once, for something new

The snow was old and chuckling tonight, abandoned by its storm.

It’s glad it melts tomorrow, glad the air is warm.

The folks were as they’ve always been tonight, as they will always be

Each on with hurt, searching eyes; each one but me

Who never saw their eyes before tonight or half guessed that they came,

Like me to search for some strange thing, without a name.

I noticed, coming back, the trees tonight, marbling the soft blue sky

Gnarled networks of deep emptiness, Orion high.

One twig-chasm or another? Wish Godspeed, to those who drink within

It was elsewhere, not there, for me, but could have been.

Jeffery Tharp 1967
